‘You are a great follower’. How would you feel if you were told that? The chances are you would be less than overjoyed. At best, it sounds like a backhanded compliment. At worst, something of an insult. You do not see ‘Seven Tips for Great Followers’ on airport bookshelves. No MBA course prospectuses promise to make you the ‘Followers of the Future’.

Originally we were driven in by our ambition to eradicate bottled water in the city of Pondicherry. Our idea for Amrutdhara was to create a viable alternative to plastic bottled water. The challenge of the digital revolution "- It was the theme of the 2016 International Conference of NGOs held from 12 to 14 December 2016 at UNESCO Headquarters, which gathered 250 NGO representatives from around the world.

In the last week of December 2016, news trickled in that the government had cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA)  non-governmental organisations (NGO) in the country.

The FCRA license allows an NGO to receive funds from abroad and the cancelling of the license led to many organisations grinding to a halt.Civil society organisations protested against the decision, questioning the basis of the action. The Union government’s relationship with the organisations working in the development sector has never been without friction.

It was quite shocking since I had no proper plans and just wanted to see what the course was all about.
